Volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Sunrise Community Center
Sunrise is the first trailer park transformation in the country without resident displacement. When complete in 2013, Sunrise will be a beautiful neighborhood of front and back porches and open space for the entire community to use. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville partners with hard-working, low-income local residents called Partner Families who join together with volunteers to build simple, decent, affordable homes.
Volunteers of various interests and skills are needed at the Habitat for Humanity Sunrise Community Center:
- Arabic speaker for English tutoring: One of our Sunrise residents is from Iraq. Her first language is Arabic and she is looking for a tutor who will come to the Center and assist in the development of her English speaking skills. The tutoring sessions must be held Mon. - Fri. between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The frequency of the sessions can be determined by the volunteer.
- Art teachers: Our residents have expressed great interest in art classes. Drawing, painting, photography and sculpture were the major areas of interest. We have a small budget dedicated to materials for art classes and are looking for teachers with a passion for their craft to share knowledge and creative enthusiasm with our diverse group of residents. I am open to teachers who can commit to leading one isolated class or a series of classes. Classes must be held Mon. - Fri. between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. or Saturdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
- Wellness classes: We have a beautiful Wellness Room dedicated to exercise classes, yoga, meditation, massage, dance, martial arts, etc. It has a private thermostat and adjustable lighting. I am looking for passionate individuals to lead guided meditation, massage, dance and zumba classes. Other unique activities that are a good fit for the space are also welcome and encouraged. Classes must be held Mon. - Fri. between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. or Saturdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
- Tutoring and mentoring: We have a diverse group of children at Sunrise between the ages of 1 and 17. We are looking to provide afterschool tutoring and/or mentoring every day of the week to neighborhood kids. We are looking for volunteers to lead group activities and/or one-on-one work with specific children. Background checks may need to be performed for volunteers interested in a long-term commitment to a child or activity. Activities/sessions must be held Mon. - Fri. between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. or Saturdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
If transportation is a challenge for a potential volunteer, we are happy to explore transportation options. City bus route #3 has a stop directly in front of our Sunrise Condominium building where the Community Center is located.
