HEREFORD SCHOLARS UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH GRANTS ‘09-‘10
Beginning this fall, Hereford Residential College will offer three to five research grants to Hereford students interested in pursuing a topic or project of academic research. Grants will be available for up to $2000 to cover research project costs including, supplies and materials, travel, living expenses etc. Research projects that speak to at least one of Hereford’s core missions of environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and community outreach will be especially of interest. The goals of this grant are to:
- Enhance undergraduate student interactions with faculty
- Support students in pursuing individually devised initiatives
- Act to support and further the college’s core missions.
EXPECTATIONS
Students must be enrolled full-time for the entire academic year, must be residents of Hereford College, and must secure a commitment from a UVA faculty member to oversee the research. Students of all years are welcomed to apply. Hereford Scholars will gather at a monthly series of lunch meetings at Runk dining hall to discuss their progress and to get feedback from other scholars and faculty fellows.
The project/ investigation must be concluded by the end of the 09-10 academic year. The results of each scholar’s work will be summarized and presented in a Hereford Scholars Research Colloquium in April 2010 (exact date, TBA). A full report of the research will be included in a new electronic research journal associated with the Hereford webpage.
SUBMISSIONS
Research proposals should be no longer than two pages in length (not including budget) and should address the questions below. An additional one-page research budget should include a breakdown of project expenses, and how you intend to spend the requested funds. All materials (total of 3 pages) must be submitted to Hereford Coordinator of Studies Phil Trella <trella@virginia.edu> no later than Thursday, October 15th at 5:00 PM. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of faculty fellows and Hereford administration. The committee may ask for further details or suggest revisions as needed. Decisions will be made on or about November 2nd. Funds will become available by November 15th. Please provide the following:
